Here's a short Product Owner story that I'd like to share:
I'm the Product Owner of a Scrum called "Plug & Play Scrum Team". For our current product, I had a particular Product Backlog Item on my Product Backlog. Let's call it "Assessment xyz". It was clear that developing this item would have consumed a significant amount of our capacity and thousands of euros in budget.
Today, after 20 minutes of talking about this item among the team, one of the Developers challenged us to think about whether we need that item at all. Thirty minutes later, we had found a way that will achieve exactly the same outcome but will only take a fraction of the development effort. That's how easy our new idea is. With less than an hour of our time invested, we saved weeks of work and thousands of euros that we can now invest into the product elsewhere!
The lesson: Nothing beats direct conversation between among team, no matter how smart the Product Owner might be or how detailed the Product Backlog Item was described upfront. Product Owners, instead of spending more time writing (!) requirements, use that time to have conversations with your team!
People who are a lot smarter than me said this about 22 years ago:
"Individuals and interactions over processes and tools".
"Simplicity, the art of maximizing the amount of work not done, is essential."
